Navigating Eclipse Season: August 2026 Vedic Astrology Guide

When vision clouds and the old skin loosens, the only way through is to feel.

Serpents’ eyes turn milky just before they shed their skin. Anyone who has experienced an eclipse season with attention understands that a similar kind of blindness belongs to the process itself. Vision clouds as the outer layer of skin loosens.

Sight might actually interfere with what must happen by feel during eclipse periods. As the light withdraws we are more easily able to access self-reflection. Think of it like a trust exercise, you know the one… someone is blindfolded and then they have to fall backwards into the arms of strangers. Eclipse season asks for this kind of trust.

The total Solar eclipse on August 12 enters through the coiled serpent of Ashlesha nakshatra and fifteen days later the Lunar eclipse departs through the domain of Shatabhisha, the nakshatra of the hundred healers.

As if the eclipses weren’t enough for August, every natural benefic is challenged this month. Mercury and Jupiter are caught up in the Solar eclipse, then they go to war just days after. Fortunately Jupiter is strong in Cancer the second half of the month, which can offset some of these challenging eclipse energies ahead.

Venus is weak in Virgo all month, while opposite Neptune and Saturn and simultaneously receiving a strong aspect from Mars, along with aspects from Pluto and Uranus. Venus-ruled friends, take a breath!

Nearly every planetary indicator connected to pleasure, speech, counsel, and perspective is under pressure at once.

What cannot be seen must be felt, what we refuse to feel can be driven into the shadows. In spite of what’s happening in the celestial sky, life events will still demand our response; jobs and families and physical bodies do not pause for anything.

Responding to what is directly in front of us is the key for getting through August on an even keel. Allow the hour-by-hour and day-to-day immediate choices to be the focus.

Reinventions, contracts, vows, and other important decisions that might significantly rearrange your life are best delayed until September, if possible.

There is light at the end of this eclipse season tunnel!

By mid-September, Mercury reaches its exaltation sign, Virgo. Venus is strong as it moves into its own sign of Libra, and the dust in the celestial corridor finally settles after many months.

Venus in Virgo: The Art of Essential Refinement

July 31–September 1

Venus has no time to relax while in Virgo’s perfectionist register. The natural indications that Venus represents are being audited and pressured: pleasure, relationships, beauty, and ease. Additionally, the parts of your life in the birth chart represented by Venus ruled signs, Taurus and Libra, along with Virgo may feel stressed, overworked, or just feeling out of sync throughout August.

Along with the shifts into its debilitation sign, Venus also runs straight into malefic planetary crossfire from the time it enters Virgo; Saturn opposes Venus from Pisces and Mars casts its fourth aspect from Gemini to Venus. Saturn asks whether matters associated with Venus and Virgo are sustainable and authentic. Mars just wants to know why everything is taking so long!

For contemplation: Is there something useful that can be refined without being thrown away? Take Taurus rising, Venus as the chart ruler and Virgo is the fifth house. What aspects of your creativity can you refine, and how can you find joy in life without compromising your core values?

Just before the solar eclipse, Venus moves into the tenth degree of Virgo, simultaneously connecting directly to Pluto (trine), Neptune (opposition), and Uranus (trine). They are all in close range aspecting each other via the tenth degree of their respective signs. And this is happening just as the eclipse-week fog hangs thick in the air. The areas of life that are stressed are showing us where reinforcement or adjustments are needed.

Once Venus enters its own sign of Libra on September 1, the pressure lifts, and what survived the inspection while in Virgo will be worth holding on to. The purpose of this Venus in Virgo journey is to discover where love, pleasure, and beauty can endure alongside imperfection.

Taurus Rising: External and internal pressures intensify as Venus spends the month in Virgo measuring function rather than pleasure. Matters connected to joy, romance, children, and creation purely for the love of it are under strict scrutiny. Saturn’s influence asks whether what you have cultivated can endure, while Mars just wants to know why it hasn’t happened already.

Adding another layer of intensity, Pluto, Neptune, and Uranus all connect closely with Venus around the Total Solar Eclipse on August 12. Consider that all of this pressure is not creating failure. Just as a gardener prunes a plant to clear space for future blooms, this transit will reveal where joy has become obligation or where love has become performative. Resist the urge to uproot creative projects that still have life in them. Allow the intensity of August to reveal what needs tending before making drastic cuts. When Venus enters Libra in September, and joy will be in full bloom once again.

Virgo Rising: Venus in Virgo is personal. Refinement, improvement, discernment are qualities you know intimately. But these gifts can become tedious if they lose their connection to pleasure.

With Saturn opposing Venus and your first house from your partnership zone, questions can come up around what is truly sustainable in your romantic or business commitments. Mars adds a layer of impatience and restlessness from Gemini, while your chart ruler, Mercury, spends the month caught between eclipse currents, making normally clear judgment harder to access.

For Virgo rising, the planetary weather turns the mirror inward. Can you recognize your own worth and value before the work is complete? A mirror simply reflects what is present: let this month reveal where refinement serves genuine growth, and where it has quietly turned into self-criticism.

Libra Rising: Venus focuses on retreat, endings, expenditure, and inner life during August. Weakened in Virgo and pressed by the conflicting energies of Mars and Saturn, socializing will likely take a back seat this month.

Layering in the outer planet influences to Venus from August 10 through 12, connections to the hidden realm of the twelfth house are deepened, dissolving structure and releasing unconscious material into the ethers. Dreams may be unusually vivid and powerful this month. With eclipse season unfolding, Venus is asking you to do what the skies are asking of everyone, only more directly: withdraw, rest, and allow what is ending to reach its natural conclusion.

Mars in Gemini: Momentum Without a Map

August 2–September 18

After a long, one-sided negotiation with Saturn, Mars leaves Taurus and pours its fiery energy into Gemini: the curious, communicative, and commerce-driven air sign ruled by Mercury.

The complication for Mars is Mercury, who is caught in a planetary war with Jupiter and tangled up in the eclipse corridor all month. Mars enters Gemini with plenty of momentum, but no reliable backup from Mercury.

Rahu’s aspect from Aquarius adds wind to an already fiery Mars in Gemini, introducing the potential for distortion, frustration, and a flair for unconventional tactics. Act where action is clearly needed, verify facts twice before repeating them, and whenever possible, sleep on it before replying impulsively to an important text, email, or social media post.

Rahu’s influence peaks as Mars approaches the exact trine to Rahu at 5°34′ on August 10, just days before the total Solar Eclipse. Check for key planets (Sun, Moon or chart ruler) or your rising degree between 4° and 6° of the air signs (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius). These degrees fall within the Mars-ruled nakshatras of air sign—Mrigashira, Chitra, and Dhanishtha—so if you are currently running a Mars Mahadasha or Bhukti, these influences will be magnified.

Aries Rising: Mars departs the slow fields of Taurus and the steady-handed restraint of Saturn for the quick-moving air of Gemini. Communication, learning, siblings, and a busy six-week period of local travel and errands are ahead. You finally have room to move more freely again.

Although the impulse coming from Rahu might be to act quickly, speak candidly, and push forward at all costs, what seems clear today may look very different once the smoke clears in September. August is all about preparation. Write the first draft, build the foundation, and map out the route before setting out.

Scorpio Rising: Mars turns its attention toward what lies beneath the surface. This six-week transit through Gemini focuses on shared resources, transformation, deep research, and the buried places of the psyche.

The Solar Eclipse in your ninth house urges contemplation of philosophical and spiritual beliefs, while Mars in the eighth house digs underneath them. Together, they require the careful approach of an archaeologist rather than the brute force of a warrior. Excavation requires patience… dig too quickly, and you risk damaging what you hoped to uncover.

What asks for your attention now has likely been waiting quietly beneath the surface. Let August uncover it layer by layer; some discoveries lose their meaning when forced into the light before they are fully understood.

The Serpent’s Coil: Total Solar Eclipse in Ashlesha

August 12 | 25°48′ Cancer

As we approach the August 12 total solar eclipse in Ashlesha, the month’s shadow work sharpens around themes of concealment, release, and emotions that can no longer remain coiled in place. Traditional wisdom counsels deferring life-altering decisions when possible. Eclipses are ultimately an ideal time for introspection and spiritual practice. Major contracts, legal verdicts, and life-altering decisions made during eclipse season deserve a thorough second review in September.

Mercury & Jupiter at War: When Council Fails

Just two days after the solar eclipse in Cancer, Mercury and Jupiter are locked in graha yuddha, or planetary war. Neither planet offers its usual clear guidance while caught in this battle for territory in the celestial sky.

Jupiter finally gains distance from the Sun this month and is visible pre-dawn once again, making it the first natural benefic to regain full strength by August 16.

Gemini Rising: Mars in your first house turns up the heat to the physical body, your sense of urgency, and you may have a shorter fuse than usual. With your chart ruler Mercury caught up in both eclipses and locked in a war with Jupiter mid-month, issues around finances, family, and core values surface. You may feel as though you have plenty of drive, but the steering is temporarily unreliable.

Channel this physical energy deliberately through movement and tangible work. Spend time in nature, take in the calming green trees of the forest if possible. Be slow to sign and spend. Forward motion is possible this month, but clear direction won’t fully arrive until September, even with Mercury finally in direct motion

Sagittarius Rising: Questions of shared resources, debt, intimacy, and psychological undercurrents in business or personal partnerships are active all month. Especially around August 14–15 during the planetary war, this transit can bring a confrontation between what you feel indebted to others vs. what you need to preserve for yourself.

With your chart ruler Jupiter weakened by combustion through mid-month, the solar eclipse, and planetary war with Mercury, your usual sense of optimism and direction may feel hard to trust. Consider this the low point of a temporary cycle. As Jupiter emerges from the Sun’s glare later in the month, what the eighth house teaches you in the dark will become practical wisdom once the light returns.

Pisces Rising: Saturn continues its long transit and heavy labor while in your first house. With your chart ruler, Jupiter, caught up in the total Solar eclipse and soon after locked in a war with Mercury, your fifth house of creativity, children, intelligence, and discernment is under pressure.

Decisions concerning children, creative projects, investments, or romance require more patience than usual this month. At the same time, the lunar eclipse on August 27 falls in your twelfth house, deepening the season’s contemplative, inward pull. Treat August as a retreat that happens to occur in the middle of your daily life. Clarity and judgment will arrive intact in September.

Sun Returns Home: Leo Season with Ketu

Sun Gandanta August 15-17 | Sun in Leo August 16–September 16

Both the Sun and Mercury make the crossing through the gandanta zone in August, the knotted junction where Ashlesha nakshatra ends and Magha begins. Water gives way to fire. The days around each ingress may feel briefly unmoored. This delicate threshold I explore in Nakshatra Gandanta: Untying the Knots.

Although the Solar eclipse has passed, its theme continues. As the Sun enters Leo, it moves directly toward Ketu, continuing the themes of release, disillusionment, and identity recalibration beyond the eclipse itself. The Sun spends the entire transit through Leo co-present with the very shadow graha that caused the eclipse.

The Sun–Ketu combination mutes exactly what Sun in Leo normally amplifies: leadership, confidence and being seen. The conjunction is exact on August 22, and this more subdued tone feels fitting post-eclipse. That same day Mercury enters Leo, conjunct Ketu exactly soon after on August 24.

Mercury with Ketu (and Sun) supports an intuitive and penetrating mind, but is poorly suited to paperwork. This combination is unreliable for details (remember, Ketu is headless!): especially related to contracts, negotiations, and precise communication. It is excellent for research, meditation, and pattern recognition. This conjunction extends the month’s central instruction… deferring major decisions when practical until September.

Leo Rising: The Sun’s homecoming to Leo, and your birthday, is ordinarily your strongest month of the year, but this time around it may feel noticeably quieter as Ketu shares the throne room with the king of the grahas. You might feel less visible than usual, or strangely detached from ambitions that might normally drive you. To add another layer, the lunar eclipse on August 27 in your seventh house brings partnership dynamics to the surface.

Any performative layers of your identity are dissolved, leaving behind only what is essential. But a quieter crown still rules. Let this month show you which parts of your radiance were being spent on others, and which parts actually belong to you.

The Hundred Healers: Partial Lunar Eclipse in Shatabhisha

August 27 | 10°40′ Aquarius

Eclipse season closes with an image straight from foundation myth: Rahu swallowing the Moon. Occuring at 10°40′ Aquarius in Shatabhisha, the nakshatra of the hundred healers, this partial lunar eclipse brings the month’s process full circle.

The month opened with the serpent, whose work is to shed the old skin; it closes in the realm of the healers, whose work begins only after the release. What surfaces in the days around August 27, through dreams or emotions is diagnostic material of the highest quality. It asks only to be witnessed for now; action can wait until the dust settles in September.

From my research desk

The cover image this month is Turner’s Sunrise with Sea Monsters, painted around 1845 at Margate. This was painted near the end of his life, and it was never finished. Art historians still debate what is surfacing in that churning water; the creatures remain half-formed, more suggestion than anatomy, rising through paint Turner never resolved.

This image seemed perfect for eclipse season and what stirs beneath the surface before it can be named. An unfinished sunrise full of almost-visible serpents seemed fitting.
