Autumn is a season of thresholds, and October's sky is no exception. As the days grow shorter here in the Northern Hemisphere, the usual flow of planetary energies is interrupted and redirected.
The benefics are poised at a threshold in October. Venus and Mercury are slowing down as they near the retrograde station, while Jupiter is approaching a fairly lengthy gandanta crossing between Cancer and Leo before changing signs at the end of this month. The king of the grahas, the Sun, moves closer to its annual entry into its debilitation sign, Libra.
While most of October is asking us to reflect during the Venus and Mercury retrograde periods, Jupiter’s shift into Leo offers an important preview of the full Jupiter-in-Leo transit that begins on July 26, 2027.
Here’s the breakdown of some of the key transits for the month:
Venus Retrograde in Libra: Rebalancing Desire
Retrograde October 3 – November 13 | Venus Combust Oct 20 – 28
My recent article about the upcoming Venus retrograde in Libra cycle is a deep dive into this transit: Love is in the Bin: Venus retrograde October 2026. If you aren’t familiar, the Venus retrograde cycle is fascinating! There is much to ponder during this Venus retrograde phase, and I have included past Venus retrograde cycles that connect to this one to reflect and connect the dots.
One thing I did not touch on in the recent article was the planetary influence of Mars and Rahu on Venus in Libra.
Venus and Rahu combined energies can bring incredible creative gifts, particularly with a strong Venus in its own sign. This combination often manifests as creativity through innovative design, acting, singing, or other musical and artistic endeavors.
The Mars aspect from Cancer to Venus in Libra is exact on October 10 during the Venus retrograde phase. The aspect from Rahu in Aquarius to Venus is almost exact on October 31 in Chitra nakshatra, and this timing could make for some very interesting Halloween costumes and parties! Expect the ghosts of fashion past to make an appearance. Think Studio 54 meets vintage glam, Bowie, Blondie, disco queens, new wave, punk and all the excess of the late 70s and early 80s.
Even though Venus is extremely strong in Libra while retrograde, the aspects from a weakened and emotionally charged Mars, with Rahu adding amplification and unconventionality, can place some pressure on Venus’s ability to function normally. Regardless, this does not stop the creative power of the Venus-Rahu-Mars combination.
Select Rising Sign Guidance
Taurus: Venus retrograde places the emphasis on your 6th house of daily routines, health and the often mundane mechanics of everyday life. Since Venus is your chart ruler, this retrograde phase deserves a lot of extra attention. October is more about reconsidering how you are spending your time, energy and resources. What part of your daily work has become unnecessarily complicated? Have you allowed your daily obligations to crowd out the things that actually bring pleasure, joy and balance?
Libra: Venus in your first house can typically be an easy, supportive transit. As your Venus stations retrograde, allow your focus to turn inward toward your identity and appearance, and the question of what genuinely feels like you. Then consider what needs to be released once Venus turns direct in November. This is a powerful transit for reevaluating personal priorities and how you present yourself to the world. Let the retrograde period show you what needs to be reconsidered first.
Aquarius: With Rahu in your 1st house and in trines to Venus in Libra, there is an emphasis on 9th house matters this month. Once Venus stations retrograde, you may find yourself reevaluating your philosophies and spiritual/religious beliefs. Or you might be drawn to new teachers or teachings that are not in your normal field of vision since Rahu’s influence gives a more unconventional approach to 9th house matters. Since Venus is also your 4th lord, there is a deep connection between your spiritual path and feeling as though you have stable, supported ground beneath you.
Sun in Libra: Crisis of Approval and Confidence
Libra October 17 – November 16 | Rahu aspects Sun Oct 20
See last month’s guide for the Virgo transit of the Sun.
The Sun enters its debilitation sign of Libra on October 17, where vitality, authority, and confidence may experience some challenges. Expressing autonomy and authority may become more complicated than usual. Depending upon the house that Sun rules in your birth chart, the surrounding issues will differ.
The Sun also enters Libra just as Jupiter approaches the gandanta zone between Cancer and Leo. This shift brings an outsized influence to the Sun and the larger planetary picture this month as Jupiter will depend upon this debilitated Sun as its dispositor while in Leo.
Rahu’s exact aspect to the Sun on October 20 adds another layer of distortion to this already weakened planet and can amplify questions surrounding authority, identity and judgment. Rather than considering every crisis of confidence a problem, this can be a useful period for noticing where genuine conviction is confused with the need for approval, agreement or recognition.
Select Rising Sign Guidance
Leo: Your Lagna lord Sun moves into Libra and your 3rd house mid-month, emphasizing communication, initiative, writing, siblings and the courage to act on your own behalf. With your chart ruler debilitated, confidence may be more difficult to access, particularly when you are trying to balance your own goals with someone else’s expectations. This is a good period to notice where the priority might be reaching an agreement rather than trusting your own judgment.
Mars in Cancer: Into the Depths of Debilitation
Mars continues to slosh its way through watery Cancer until mid-November. Mars has significantly less support once Jupiter enters gandanta during the last week of October and first week of November, which makes an already uncomfortable Mars transit through Cancer more apparent.
Without Jupiter’s expansive, protective influence on Mars, what has been contained or managed in the past few weeks may become harder to deal with, especially when emotionally provoked.
Mars in Cancer tends to generate actions through feeling, protection and emotional responses. This is a time to be more conscious of what is driving actions, whether from conviction or from a vulnerable emotional state.
Select Rising Sign Guidance
Aries: Mars is least comfortable in the watery and emotional sign of Cancer and for Mars-ruled Aries, this means feeling at home with emotions is more of a struggle than usual. Impatience or frustration can come up around issues or people that would normally provide emotional support. Once Jupiter leaves Cancer in late October, this pressure will become more noticeable. The warrior Mars likes to win, so be mindful of turning your internal emotions or external home environment into a battlefield.
Cancer: Mars moving through Cancer is a very personal transit for you. Frustration, impatience or reactivity can come up, especially when connected to your emotions, your sense of security, or control. Since Mars is the raja yoga karaka and the ruler of your 5th and 10th houses, creativity, children, romance or career can be directly tied to your sense of identity, especially if you are born with Mars in Cancer. Once Jupiter leaves Cancer, Mars loses the expansive and wise support. The second half of this transit may require a more conscious effort to keep frustration from driving action before you have decided what you actually want.
Scorpio: Mars transiting the 9th house can place pressure on issues related to spiritual beliefs, higher education, teachers, foreign travel and your world-view. You may feel like you are being pushed into acting on your convictions, but your actions can be more emotionally charged during this transit than you might normally experience. Once Jupiter makes the shift into Leo, there is less support for finding the deeper meaning behind what might irritate you. Watch for the difference between defending your beliefs and the need to prove that you are right.
Capricorn: The transit of Mars through Cancer places extra emphasis on relationships, whether they are business or romantic partnerships. As the ruler of your 4th and 11th houses, tensions around home, family, friends or shared goals can creep into your other relationships. Once Jupiter leaves Cancer, there is less support for keeping conversations around these issues constructive. This is a transit where the instinct to confront something may be strong, but choosing the right battle matters just as much as making your point.
Jupiter Enters Leo: Crossing the Gandanta Threshold
Cancer – Leo Gandanta October 23 – November 8 | Jupiter ingress Leo October 31
Jupiter runs the gandanta gauntlet between Cancer and Leo this month. Something about how we understand, believe or orient ourselves may need to be untied before it can take a new form.
Gandanta is one of those Jyotish concepts that makes much more sense once you understand what the metaphorical knot itself represents rather than simply treating it as challenging degrees. I went much deeper into the mythology, symbolism and mechanics of gandanta in Nakshatra Gandanta: Untying the Knots, if you want to explore this transit further. Read the full article →
Jupiter in Leo with Ketu: Stripping Away Dogma
Although the transit in Leo will be short, this period can offer important insights into the longer 2027–2028 Jupiter in Leo movement. The main difference will be that Jupiter’s October/November transit through Leo is characterized by its conjunction with Ketu, which is at just over one degree Leo as it prepares to change signs and move backward into Cancer.
At first glance this combination of Jupiter and Ketu appears profoundly spiritual. And indeed this combination can be very spiritual. However, Leo’s ruler Sun is in its debilitation sign Libra as Jupiter enters Leo. This is very important and has an outsized influence on the Jupiter-Ketu combination which has the ability to fuel disillusionment with teachers, doctrines, institutions or one’s own previously held beliefs.
Select Rising Sign Guidance
Sagittarius: The brief shift into Leo brings your attention into the house of dharma, teachers, higher knowledge and philosophical beliefs. This is an important preview for 2027/2028 and for considering what truly gives your life meaning. Once in Leo, Jupiter’s approach to Ketu can strip away attachments around assumed beliefs, whether from childhood or adopted later in life. The two-week gandanta passage may be uncomfortable before new beliefs can start to take shape. You may find yourself less interested in what you are supposed to believe and more concerned with what you actually know.
Pisces: During the short stay that Jupiter is in Leo and approaching Ketu, something about how you create, teach, love or express your own understanding may be shifting. The fairly lengthy gandanta crossing can make the last week of October and first week of November feel more like a period of sorting out what still has meaning and what has become stale around 5th house matters. Don’t be surprised if an old creative impulse returns in a different form.
Mercury Stations Retrograde: Rewriting Agreements
Like Venus, Mercury also has a retrograde echo in Libra, but Mercury’s retrograde phase does not create a consistent eight-year pattern like Venus.
Turning retrograde this year on October 24 at 26º44’ Libra in Vishakha nakshatra, Mercury retraces its steps back to 10º47’ Libra and Swati nakshatra. The shift from Vishakha’s determined search for a goal reaches back into Swati nakshatra’s restless independence. Reconsider agreements, relationships, negotiations and decisions that seemed settled earlier in the month; terms may have changed, or maybe we are no longer looking at the situation from the same perspective.
Mars adds some urgency to the mental revisionist process with the fourth aspect to Mercury on October 2, before Mercury turns retrograde, and again on October 30, during Mercury retrograde.
The second aspect may prompt a revision of the first: something initiated, decided or communicated earlier in October may come back around for review.
On top of the Mars influence, Rahu also places pressure on Mercury and vata-induced mental agitation is possible. This might manifest as an overreaction or distorted judgment, and is something to be aware of the entire time Mercury is in Libra, either retrograde or direct.
The retrograde motion itself isn’t necessarily the issue. The challenge lies in discerning when something genuinely warrants reconsideration and when incomplete information, irritation or urgency compels us to react prematurely.
Interestingly, Venus and Mercury both station direct on the same day, November 13. It feels like a natural closure to the long process of reconsideration that begins in October.
Select Rising Sign Guidance
Gemini: Stationing retrograde in your 5th house, your chart ruler Mercury turns attention inward toward creativity, romance, children, and the way you process and express ideas. With Mercury receiving pressure from debilitated Mars in Cancer and Rahu from Aquarius, the mind and nervous system can be on hyperdrive. It is especially important to slow down before reacting or reaching a conclusion without all of the facts and details. An idea that seemed finished may need to be revisited, revised or approached from an entirely different angle.
Virgo: Mercury retrograde highlights finances, personal values and family matters throughout October and November. Mars from Cancer adds urgency to verbal communication, while Rahu can amplify uncertainty or make something seem more urgent than it actually is. Choose your words carefully once Mercury turns retrograde. Conversations that began as minor disagreements can become considerably more heated than intended. Instead, this is a great time for reviewing past conversations, spending or agreements rather than rushing to settle everything immediately.
